We had a collective panic attack this afternoon. (No, that isn't the good news.) Earlier this month we again partnered with Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul but we had a couple of Jan's senior weeks and we -- let's just say when we read Nikita Cat's post on the same giveaway (ends 8/28, 11:59 pm PST) , we didn't give it a second thought. After all, the end of August is near and we'd already finished our giveaway for the month.
Well, if you're reading this, you've probably guessed by now that we hadn't even started it. And Jan wouldn't let us use the computer. She had about 3 software programs open and 5 or 6 tabs open in the browser and the floor around the typing chair and the desk were littered with breakables. Glass and china items Jan was posting on Jan's Funny Farm Fair. (That's her "yard sale" of personal items. Stop by and browse.)
We have finally
Now we're ready for the good news.
We're off to a late start on this giveaway. You might want to enter right away so you don't forget. We're going to list the specifics, in no particular order, just numbering them so they stand out for you.
1) You must be a US resident to enter.
2) The giveaway ends at 11:59 PM EDT on Tuesday, August 31. We (probably Sam) will draw a winning name - from something non-breakable - on September 1st and post it. Be sure to leave a blog url or an email address so we can get in touch with you should you win.
3) The theme is Summer Travel Stories. Share your pet-related travel stories or tips on how to care for your pet on the road or when you are away. Some of you take your pet camping or on a motor trip, some of you do travel on your vacation but have to leave leave your pets home - board your pets while you are gone or use a pet sitter. We look forward to reading your travel stories and your tips. Have fun.
4) Entering is simple. You do not need to have a blog to enter this giveaway.
a) Just leave your story or tip in the comments of this post.
b) Or post your entry on your own blog and leave a link in the comments of this post.
5) The prize is either a dog or a cat "goody bag" from Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. The goody bag will be pet appropriate, depending on whether the winner is a dog or a cat.
Stop by and "Like" the Chicken Soup Facebook Page.
Grey of Hubble Space Center took a turn for the worse and had to be helped to the bridge last evening. Purrs and tail wags for his family.
One other thing. We found the article "Mandatory spay/neuter: Sacrificing animal lives to ideology" posted on Pet Connection Blog to be interesting reading.
UPDATE 9/1/10 -- The winner is announced here.
My mom doesn't go away -

Sounds like a fun contest, I can't wait to see some of the entries!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for the contest!
ReplyDeleteWe never gets taken anywhere and really the Dad hasn't taken Mommy anywhere in forever. When they go to Meridian to visit the grandbeans the kids are usually home at least one of them to feed us. They are decent stand ins. Youngest boy bean gives us to much food according to Mommy.
ReplyDeleteFenris actually thinks he would like to go traveling with them. He likes riding in the car.
Got an idea for this one, even though I don't travel. It is a great tip for keeping safe all furries while they are on the road. The mom makes sure of this when I am in the car, which is only going to the vet. Will start to work on this after this weekend is over. Hey Jan, can I hire you as the reminder secretary for me and if the mom doesn't work for me please give her an email reminder! Thanks. Love to all at your place.
ReplyDeletetravel adventures!!??
ReplyDeleteMom and dad are not allowed to go anywhere - ever.
Mom likes being super organized so I guess if we had to go somewhere, she would certainly take into account all of your great tips. We live 30 miles out of Wash DC and mom things we should compile an emergency pack with of course all the stuff Miles and I need. and if there is room in the car, they can take a few things too.
This was devastating news about sweet Grey. We are purring for his family as we know it is so hard to accept such disappointment and sadness.
bonks to you and tell your mom not to trip over the breakables and break something.
I will be waiting to read the stories!
ReplyDeleteTake care
Kisses and hugs

We just came over to say hi and saw this contest. We wondered if we could give you the link to one of our Summer Posts where we went to the Beach to see if it could be entered. If it isn't to late, here it is: http://countrycorgis.blogspot.com/2010/07/hurray-beach-by-oc.html
ReplyDeleteWe are so sorry that your friend had to take the Bridge, but know that we all do sooner or later, and it looks like Grey was well loved while he was here. Now he can run free and healthy...
When I was a kitten, I used to travel with my mom all the time, but as she began working on her dissertation and would have to visit numerous places on the road, I was required to stay home. Mom does not send me to a "kennel" when she is away because I don't do well. She actually hires a "pet sitter" for me. Once, while mom was away, there was a big storm. The pet sitter was so concerned about me that she stayed overnight on the couch. Don't you think that was very nice of her?
ReplyDeletePlease enter me in the giveaway!
We have a family cabin in Mt. Lasson Natl Forest. We have all the stops mapped out that are dog friendly. They either have a place were we can all eat outside together or they have some nice grass for the poodle. I keep traveling dog bowl and poop bags in the car at all times, so we're always ready to travel.
ReplyDeleteOur fun time this summer was beatin the stick. We was beatin cancer wif a great big ole stick!!!

ReplyDeleteOliver our 1 year old Boston Terrier travel to NYC this summer. The trip was exciting for him for this was his first ride on a plane. He traveled in a special carrier which allowed him inside the plane with his mom and dad. The flight went great and he enjoyed the ride. Once in NYC he settled in real fast.Elevator rides and walks to Central Park were everyday highlights. He learne to just walk and go with the flow of the crowd. Oliver had his picture taken in Times Square along with many other famous NY attractions. His least favorite part was the grates from the subway on the sidewalks, he quickly learned to go around them. The taxi rides were definately faster than "owners" driving. The plane ride home was great, and Oliver slept the entire ride. Oliver made this trip very special.

When our mom goes away, She leaves ben at her parents house, and us kitties get a sitter. He comes and lives with us so that we have someone to take care of us.
ReplyDeleteMom leaves a page of directions- emergency contact numbers such as vets and where to get a hold of her. She also leaves what food what time, moms always leaves medications JUST in case. And mom informs the vets to keep their ears open just in case because she's going to be gone. THIS way she knows we'll get the best care and everyone will be prepared. We've never had to use any of that stuff, but it makes mom feel a lot better!
When we go away, we usually have our family look in on the kitties. Or sometimes we leave them with grandma and grandpa. They like to spoil the cats.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Steve McQueen. I am a two-year old Chihuahua and I live with my mom in Alabama. My dad lives in Toronto because he has a job and my mom goes to school. This was the best summer ever! I got to ride in 2 airplanes and then had a car ride to Pennsylvania and I got to be ring-bearer at my parents' wedding! We were there for a week and I got to stroll around the Penn State University campus and go for lots of walks in the park.
ReplyDeleteThen we had another car ride back to the airport and 2 more airplanes.
I travel lots with my mom - but by car, plane or train she always keeps me safe in my soft-sided travel bag... it buckles into the back seat of the car and fits perfectly under the seat on the airplane. And my bag has a window so I can see mom and she can reach in and pet me (which she does the whole time, and because she does that, I stay very relaxed on the airplane).
I hope everyone enjoys my story - I was very excited that my mom and dad got married this summer!
Oh! Mom told me to leave an email address where you could reach her... email her at banana_hammock44@hotmail.com
So, my animal travel story is currently happening! I live in Los Angeles and wanted to do a quick get-a-way with the pooch. I booked a hotel in Santa Barbara through doginmysuitcase.com and came up here yesterday. When I got here and was checking into the hotel, I asked them if they needed to know any info about my dog I brought with me. They then told me they do not allow pets at their hotel. I was completely flumoxxed since I booked through dog in my suitcase.com so that I would not have a problem with hotel allowing pets. Grrrr. So, I called the website and they helped get me booked into a hotel that ACTUALLY allowed dogs. I am not going to lie, I think I ended up with the better deal, since my new hotel is right across the street from the beach!!
