Miri, and the Pregnant Cow

Starting today the CB is holding an emergency auction for Miri, the little kitten Katie rescued and is caring for. Miri needs vet care for her asthma.   The auction will last a week. We hope you will stop by and help Miri. Even if you can't bid or donate, you can help by passing the word to your friends.

You can meet Miri at Katiez Furry Mewz

Did you read the story of the pregnant cow that was ordered shot by a veterinarian at the California State Fair? No, this isn't a joke. The cow got loose so the "professionals" tried to herd her with an SUV and finally shot her -- and her unborn calf -- because she "charged" and trampled a bicycle.

Gee, we wonder why she might have been upset. She was due to give birth that same day and the "Keystone Cops" were chasing her like a fleeing bank robber. The folks working there weren't afraid of her, and they were shocked and upset when the 11 shots suddenly rang out. We have to wonder whether the vet and staff for the Livestock Nursery attraction actually knew anything about livestock. Perhaps they mistook the pregnant cow for a bull?

We don't live on a farm but according to some of the comments, any 4-H kid, someone with a rope, or an old lady with a bucket of oats could have walked that cow back to where she was supposed to be.

You can read the story here.

The SPCA protested the shooting of the cow by returning a $1200 check -- giving it to the HSUS -- so it can be used to make changes in the way livestock are handled at the fair. We certainly hope HSUS uses the money for the purpose it was intended.  That story is here.

  1. ?!?!??!

    Unbelievable.

It's atrocious enough that she was to be on display for everyone to witness her giving birth. That was the only reason for transporting her there.

When she should have been safe in her pen away from prying eyes apart from a vet and maybe the farmer help her give birth.

    I'm beyond belief.

I hope her and her baby's deaths puts an end to such practices.

    Take care

  6. That's a terrible story about the cow. Humans at their best. And not a good message to send to children.

We want to thank you for stopping by our blog and sending Jack some get well wishes. He and his sister were almost senselessly put to death by their previous owner 3 years ago because she no longer wanted them.

  10. The way some apes handle animals makes us very angry. Too many times machismo, sticks, whips and aggression are used to handle livestock animals, when all that is needed is calmness and a basic understanding of animal behaviour.

We think a live birth exibit is a horrible thing to put any animal through too.
