Cyndi Takes Charge

Cyndi:  All right, everyone, listen up!  Today is going to be a good day around here. There will be no bad behavior, no knocking things to the floor for Jan to not pick up, no breaking anything, no accidents, no arguments, definitely no fighting, and no backtalk!  Understood?

Buddy:  Don't you think you are overstepping your place, Cyndi?  You aren't in charge here!

Cyndi: I am snoopervisor for today!  So pull up your britches, slap a smile on your face, and try to behave for just one day!

Buddy:  What's the occasion?  Are we expecting a visitor?

Cyndi:  This house is a mess!  Marcus, roll the vacuum out of the closet.  No, never mind, you'll just waste time chasing and biting it.  Instead, grab the broom.  Buddy, can you reach the sink to wash the dishes?

Buddy:  What?

Cyndi:  Merci, tie a duster around your tail and dust the low furniture, such as books and bookshelves.  Taylor, find the small duster and do the taller furniture.  Percy, since you and Rusty knocked many of the small items off the desk onto the floor, you can pick things up from the floor and put them back where they belong.  Micah, you can stand by and use the dishwater Buddy splashes to mop the kitchen floor.  There's a brand new mop near the sink.

Buddy:  And what will you do?

Cyndi:  I will supervise.  Otherwise, Marcus will play bitey with the broom and the rest of you will goof off.

Buddy:  What's the occasion?  Are we expecting guests?

Cyndi:  I hope not! The house needs a good cleaning.

Buddy:  Cleaning is Jan's job.

Cyndi:  But Jan has been sick for over a week and someone has to whip this place into shape. It's looking more and more like a used tissue factory.  Do you want Jan to get well?

Buddy:  Of course I do.

Cyndi:  Then let's help her so she can concentrate on getting well.  Then we can go back to being slobs again and Jan can return to being our servant.

Buddy:  Okay, when you put it that way.  I'm tired of listening to her coughing and honking.  I haven't had a decent night's sleep since she got sick.

Cyndi:  None of us have, so let's surprise her.  The idea of Marcus wielding a broom and Micah mopping the floor makes me laugh.  Perhaps it will have the same effect on Jan.

Buddy:  And Jan keeps saying laughter is good medicine.  Cyndi, you're brilliant.

Cyndi:  I know. But remind me of that when Marcus sweeps the dirt under the washing machine, or Percy yells "lawsuit" because Merci hit him in the snoot with her duster, or Micah claims he should be on Disability because he slipped on some soapy water.

Buddy:  I guess your job is harder than mine.  I think I'll go wash some dishes so Micah can swab the floor.


Many of you know our old friends Dezi & Raena - service cats to their mom Audra, who is disabled but spunky.  Back in January they did a post on some expensive dental work Audra needs to alleviate pain and infection.  This is not cosmetic; it is a serious health and pain issue.  We decided to share a link to their first post on the subject - Put That Finger In My Mouth and See What Happens.  The post contains links to their youcaring fundraiser and to their paypal.  If you could spare a few dollars, it would really help toward the first step in the journey.  And please pray for them and their needs. 

Pancake Breakfast

Cyndi:  Thankful Thursday is the perfect time to post a collage of pictures from last Saturday's fundraiser for the local Humane Society.  You might have guessed from all the flags in the picture that it was the day after Veteran's Day.  The two-hour pancake breakfast fundraiser was hosted at Chili's by Miss Pat, a manager there.  Jan said that Miss Pat was as nice as could be.

Percy:  Jan was both looking forward to it and dreading it, as the Humane Society folks were going to play both hostess and waitress. Jan hasn't served tables since before the Stone Age and she was a bit concerned she'd either fall down on shaky legs or spill coffee on a donor.  

Cyndi:  But instead of having to run around the restaurant, all she had to do was to stand at the door and help collect tickets and cash.  The local high school Beta Club -  a pre-creaky, still energetic group of young people - came and did the running around.  They did a great job and everyone survived.  Even Jan.

Percy: And Coco's Cupboard brought two kittens and a tail-thumping dog to greet everyone entering the restaurant.  There will be another fundraiser held in a few months and the plan is to have more adoptable animals present.

Cyndi:  Jan has been with the Humane Society for many years.  It isn't as active as it used to be because the members are aging, but they do what they can.  They provide help for people where they can  - emergency pet food, help with spay/neuter cost, etc. - and try to encourage adoptions at the county-run animal shelter.  During the entire month of October, the Humane Society paid half the adoption fee for all dogs and cats adopted there.

Percy:  Have you noticed a pattern here, Cyndi?  Jan said she had a pancake breakfast while she was there, but she didn't even bring a crumb home.  She never brings a crumb home when she eats elsewhere.

Cyndi:  Can you imagine the pandemonium if she did bring home a crumb?  How would she split a crumb eight ways?

Percy:  With a sharp knife!

Thankful Micah and Fundraiser

Hey, everyone, Micah here.  Isn't this neat?  Jan says I look every bit as handsome as Rusty and Percy, who had their portraits painted last week as part of her 30 pics in 30 days challenge.  You can see all the nifty portraits she painted in those 30 days here.

Micah

And now we'd all like to tell you about the human dad from Talk with the Paw blog. Liz (hu-mom to Tigger & Munchkin) hasn't been able to blog very often for quite a while because she's had to help her husband as well as earn some green papers for them.  He's been very sick and appears headed for a heart transplant.  As we understand it from a friend who was going through the transplant process a few years ago, the patient is responsible in advance for raising adequate funds to cover everything insurance won't be paying for.  And that requires some major fundraising.

We asked Mom Liz if it is okay to share her information and she said yes.  " Hubby is in the process of being evaluated for a heart transplant.  The fundraiser is to cover all the associated expenses not covered by Medicare, such as having to live in a hotel very near the hospital for a whole month afterwards, and the extra gas (and sometimes lodging and meal) costs for frequent clinic visits for the rest of his life to check on the health of the new heart."

UPDATE: November. 2nd  from Liz, "There have been some new developments with hubby's health, and for now, he's been bumped off the transplant program, and therefore has become ineligible for the fundraiser." 

We're sorry to learn this and hope things will change for the better soon.

Roses for Micah

Hey, Micah here.  Sorry we missed a couple of Thankful Thursday posts.  Last week I wanted to post about what I was thankful for but Miss Computer Hog ... well, hogged the computer.

On Mother's Day Jan came home from church with two long stemmed red roses.  They were given to everyone there for their mother or in her memory, if she had passed away.  I never met Jan's Ms Mother (Jan says we have to be good Southern cats and call our elders Ms or Mr) but all the other Funny Farmers knew her.

Jan put them in a vase of water on the kitchen table.  If you remember, I've been living in the kitchen for a few months now (by choice; it's near food and water and my warm bed) so I just knew she'd put them there for me to play with.  So I did.  At night I'd take them out of the vase and we'd play games.

Their leaves kinda fell off and they started looking a bit punk.So I took them out of the water more often but nothing helped.  I even tried to resuscitate them. Then they shriveled up and after one big sigh of good-bye, they both died.

I miss my friends and wish they could have hung around longer, but I'm very thankful they were here long enough to become my friends. They were fun to play with.  And they smelled good too.  Not like tuna, but with a flowery kind of scent.

This post was prepared before the F5 tornado ripped through Oklahoma the other day. We joined the BlogPaws Disaster Response Network when it was set up.  We received some information from them yesterday and posted it on Facebook but forgot to add it here.

The largest need at the moment is cash. BlogPaws is reaching out to the BDRN and all the sponsors of the 2013 conference to pledge a commitment for Oklahoma. This collective donation will go to the World Vets who are assessing the needs on site to make the best decision on where the money will go – based on their work in past disasters.

Donations will be collected by World Vets through 11:59 PM Tuesday, May 28^th. The collective donation will be announced when the money is ready for delivery. A badge with a direct donate link is at the top of our right sidebar.

Many of you have lived through a tornado, but we never have, so we can not truly imagine the shock and devastation of such a powerful storm.  We pray for all those affected, especially for those who lost a loved one.

Micah Shushes Kids

Shhhhh, Micah here, hiding under the bed for a very hush-hush post today.  If Jan finds out I posted her picture, I'll be in big-time trouble.

First, remember this recent picture of Cynthia holding Daphne, the two-day old baby goat? She was 2 weeks old on Friday. 

Well, Cynthia and Jan went back Thursday to see two new goats born the day before.  This is Jan holding one of them. 

There were also two newborn goats there, not even an hour old.  This is the talkative one with mama Nanny to the right..  She wasn't due till this week but guess she was jealous of all the attention the other two mothers were getting.

All five of the kids, including Daphne, were girls so they will grow up to be milk goats.

Oh, and Jan said young goats in a barn aren't much different than dogs and cats in the house.  The day-old goats were busy checking out our smell on her clothes and then we checked her out when she came home.

Prancer, Pip and Puddles

This week we have the cats from the Prancer Pie blog as our interview guests.  We're sure you'll learn some things about them you didn't know - or have forgotten.  Stop by Mousebreath to read their story, The 4 Ps ... Prancer, Princess, Precious and Princeton.

As many of you know, Princess left for the bridge very unexpectedly last Saturday, so this - her last interview  - is dedicated to her. 

Prancer will be visiting the vet Monday and his mom is very nervous after losing Princess last Saturday when she took her to the vet, so purrs would be welcomed.  

Today, March 15, is a very special day for the Dynamic Duo of Puddles and Pip.  They have brought so much joy (and mayhem) to our lives that Blogville's Mayoress Madi has declared this Pip and Puddles Appreciation day.  And they are being awarded the following Blogville honors- Pip will be bestowed the title "Blogville King of Cheeseburgers"  and Puddle with the title "Blogville Queen of Merriment and Mayhem."

We are so happy for both of them, knowing full well they deserve this honor - and more.  For example, Puddles should have her driving privileges restored in North or South Carolina (or both?) and anywhere else she's currently only licensed to walk, not drive.

Pip and Puddles, we will never forget the day you came to visit and we had so much fun (and only caused two accidents).  Riding the rails at Six Flags Over Georgia, speed-boating down the Flint River with the wind blowing Buddy's ears, pigging out at an all you can eat catfish buffet, and sharing Cheetos with the feline Funny Farmers (who had enough sense to not ride in a sports car with Puddles driving).  Sometimes we go back and read 6 Flags and 5 Fruitcakes again.  We don't ever want to forget that perfect day. And we only received 3 letters of complaint after you left.  That's probably a record for you two.

Mr. Pip and Nurse Puddles, thank you for being our friends.  We will always treasure your friendship.

Enjoy your special day.  Tomorrow Madi will send you a bill for the party damages to Blogville. :)

Cat Out Of Bag At Circus

We don't have any paper bags so we don't have any paper bag shots, especially not of Jan in a bag. Thus we had to borrow a public domain cat in the bag pic.

This was Jan on Saturday.  Lazing in a paper bag.  (Metaphorically speaking, of course.  Jan wouldn't fit in a paper bag.)  Then strange things began to happen.  By Monday boxes she hadn't ordered started arriving.  Jan might be a bit dense at times but even she figured out something was up,. And now the cat is out of the bag, although she's been told she doesn't know everything yet.  (We've been telling her she doesn't know everything for years, but she doesn't pay any attention when we say it.)

If you have no idea what we're referring to, that's okay.  We're accustomed to that.  We live with Jan. 

But if you were aware of the secret, hush-hush, don't tell Jan plot, we can only say THANK YOU!  Thank you, Laure, for initiating it.  Ann, for helping her with a mailing,  And those of you who have participated in any way.  We are fortunate to know such a warm community of bloggers.

We won't embarrass anyone by specifics.  We've emailed our thanks to everyone we're aware of, except where there was no name in the box.  We've been told that's because you want to be Anonymous. 

We never heard of Zymox topical cream before but Jan liked what she read on the box about enzymes so she is trying it on Buddy's skin.   She ordered something natural to give, which has been recommended by another blogger.  So we hope Buddy will finally be on the road to nirvana.  (Any place of complete bliss and delight and peace.).

Helping Jan Clean

Hey, Rusty here

I've been having fun rolling in the dirt  and then leaving a trail of leaves behind me as I walked through the house afterward.  We've enjoyed a few rainy but warm winter days.  The weather is about to change, but I'll have fun memories to tide me over till spring. 

And you know what happens when we kitties eat grass? Yep, we hurl!  So I'm pretty proud of myself for single-handedly ... um, I mean single-pawedly keeping Jan busy cleaning up after me.  

Now that I've got Jan somewhat trained to clean up after me, I think I deserve a snooze.  Training a human is hard work!

But first, a little news.

The Furriends of the Cat Blogosphere auction blog is putting together an auction for Sallie, who recently was rushed to an emergency vet with severe complications from diabetes.  She is blind but home now.  Her mom Dawn needs some help with the high vet bills. 

The auction will begin next Monday, January 21st.  If you would have an item or two you'd like to donate to the auction, send a photo with a brief description and a suggested starting bid to Marg (be sure to convert this to the proper email format) margaretmsan AT gmail DOT com.

While most communties are moving away from arcane animal control practices and embracing non-lethal methods, Barberton City Council plans to fast-track a vote on a feeding ban on Monday, Dec.17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barberton City Council Chambers - 576 W. Park Ave., Barberton, Ohio 44203

Barberton residents who feed an outside pet when it is dark can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined $50 a day by one of four enforcement agencies. One of the enforcers according to the ordinance is Summit County Animal Control.

This feeding ban was passed in an open meeting of the subcommittee. Carol Frey, chair of the subcommittee, said that there would be no further discussion. Law Director Lisa O. Miller, wants one reading rather than the normal three readings. Concerned Barberton residents will not be able obtain clarifications or explanations. Barberton residents should be able to provide care for their pets, feral cats, or the occasional lost or stray pet. There should be three readings so that citizens can be informed about the ordinance.

Please attend the City Council meeting on Monday Dec 17th. You can speak for five minutes. If you cannot attend, please call Barberton City Officials, send emails & faxes to express concerns, ask questions and ask for more time to obtain clarifications and explanations and to remove the punitive aspect of this ordinance.

A public record request showed that there were only 13 complaints in all of Barberton in an entire year -- not all of them were about feeding and not all of them were found to be valid. A complaint is counted numerically even if it is called in anonymously and even if no problem is found. An earlier version of this ordinance was unanimously withdrawn by Barberton City Council in 2007 and by the Barberton Safety Committee in 2010.

Thanks for Serving

Yesterday was Veterans Day but our town held it's annual observation ceremony at 11 a.m. this morning in a nearby park instead of at the courthouse.

This is Billy J. from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), one of the many veterans present today.  He was the local VFW Commander for most of the years Jan was with the VFW Auxiliary.  He was a highly patriotic, high energy, keep the veterans in the public eye, go-getter type Commander.

There is always an impressive number of participants from the local high school.  This is the UL NJROTC lining up before the ceremony.

More NJROTC members, including the Color Guard, marching and carrying the flags. Those on the pavilion spoke in one capacity or another.

Marg and Joe's Friend Jasmine

Remember Joe the donkey and these lovely kitties from the Bora Bora trip last year?  Well, they all belong to Marg.  She has two miniature donkeys, dogs and cats - including ferals she feeds.  She does this on a small retirement income.  She is also the volunteer auctioneer for Furriends of the CB auction blog, helping raise funds for others in need. 

Her dog Jasmine is in kidney failure and she could use some help with the vet bills.  If you could spare a couple dollars to help out, Marg and all the furries would be grateful.  Thee is a Chip In button in her sidebar.

Meezers and SweetFeets

Whew!  We survived an interview with the mischievous Meezers - Sammy, Miles, Nicky & Billy..

Fortunately, Sammy didn't ask to drive Jan's car.  (We doubt she carries enough insurance.)  But they did manage to pull a prank on Miles again.  He did survive the "shipping" and is safely home.  The box with the food that they shipped him in?  It didn't fare quite as well, but we all just brushed off the dirt and ate the slightly squished ham sandwiches.  Buddy, Merci & Sam got the leftovers.  They thought the dirt added flavor.

All in all it was a lot of fun.  But now we all need a nap.

Buddy, TCC and Sebastian

Hey, Buddy here.  It's my turn today.  I'm ignoring the howls and meows of the other Funny Farmers' protests cause I want to share a dog almost as smart as I am.  He's almost as generous too.  Yep, we could have been best buds if he hadn't gotten caught and imprisoned.  Good thing he got released or I'd have to swim the Atlantic Lake and rescue him.

Sebastian of Sebastian The Sensitive Soul blog  (@SeabassCat on Twitter) is in need of prayers and help for his family.  They are alive and together but they lost everything when a fire burned down their apartment building.  Other tenants did lose pets.

Tober Treats Funny Farmers

In case any of you think we're joking when we say we're waaaaaaay behind in everything, we won Tober the Thorntown Library cat's poster contest a month ago and we are finally doing our prize post. Jan's excuse is that it took a while for the prize to arrive. Our explanation is that it took Jan forever to take photos of the prize and finally download them from the camera.

We were quite excited when Tober said his Assistant Bosses would donate $50 to a charity of our choice.  Since Jan helped us, we let her choose and she picked All Creatures Are Truly Special (All C.A.T.S.)

We also got a box of goodies. Jan left the Certificate of Awesomeness lying on top of the open box and Percy smelled the treats and left fang marks when he tasted the paper.  Did she take photos then?  No, she stuck our Certificate inside a plastic protector and made us wait even longer.

Percy checked to make sure everything was there when Jan opened the box again.

And then San moved in to check out the contents. 

Percy got a whiff of the Kong Kickeroo and moved in for the attack.

Uh-oh, Percy pretty much cleared the footrest when he attacked.

Percy:  Oh, well, if the KK is dead, I might as well check out the box.
Rusty:  I don't know.  That KK doesn't look quite dead to me.

Rusty: Nope, I still hear a heartbeat. 

Rusty:  I'm not sure whether to kill it or perform CPR..   

Cyndi:  Well, the guys are obviously incompetent hunters.  I'll have to dispatch this KK myself.  . 

Sam:  Is it treat time now?  I'm first.  I'm first.  I'm first.  ** Keeps licking his chops as he slides his butt  and head an inch per move closer to Jan and the bag of Natural Duck Tenders she's opening so she can't get a photo cause his face is right in the camera lens**

Merci:  Is it my turn now?

Sam:  It's my turn.  I'm next.
Buddy:  Don't you dare give my treat to Sam!  He's been first, second and third.in line, and I haven't had one yet.
(Jan says not to pay any attention to the mess in the living room.  We drag our beds around the room.  Jan calls it messy.  We call if homey.)

Merci:  These are the duck tenders treats Jan was so stingy with.  They are yummy.  She tried to get photos of the cats enjoying their treats but they won't beg like we dogs do.  We tried begging for them too but Jan wouldn't let us have any.  But rest assured, Tober, the kitties are enjoying their prize treats. 

Please continue to pray for Sandra and her family after losing their home and 5 of her 7 Houston Pittie Pack dogs in a house fire early Friday morning.  The two weekend commentathons  we posted on Saturday did well.  And the Chip In started by Mayzie's mom (the Chip In button will remain in our sidebar until the Chip In closes) has raised over $6500.00 so far.
