Photos, Photos, Aieeeee Photos

The local Humane Society and county animal shelter sponsored a special Saturday adoption day on June 21st. Jan said it was a terrific day, except for the sunburn she wore home. We wouldn't know since we weren't invited.

Buddy: She's been exhausted this week, but no wonder. She just had a birthday and turned ancient. Would you believe she's ....OUCH! She hit me. I don't care what you say, Jan. You were NOT swatting a fly. You swatted me. Do I look like a fly to anyone? Just for that, she's mmvmvvm --

Cotton: Sorry. Buddy is having a little trouble speaking at the moment. I think the rest of us will pass on giving away Jan's age.

Anyway, before Buddy got us sidetracked, we were saying Jan has been working on the photos all week. Well, not all week, just off and on when she could keep her eyes open and her brain in gear. She captioned 10 for the newspaper. Then she had to stop to take the weekly shelter photos and .....

And finally, just a short while ago she got the adopted animals and a few extra pictures posted. We'd congratulate her for finally accomplishing this but she's busy snoring at the moment.

We know you don't live in this area but if you would like to see the happy adopters and adoptees, drop by www.upsonpets.com.

Now, if you will excuse us, as long as Jan has fallen asleep in a chair, we're going to go take a snooze in her bed.

Night.

Sassy to the Rescue

Shhhhh. Cameron, don't knock the glass over or Jan will come to investigate. We've got to get this special surprise posted before she finishes washing the dishes.

When we wrote the post for Cotton's birthday - which Jan forgot at the last minute, after all Sassy's hard work to smuggle in a birthday card and gifts for Jan to hide until Cotton's big day - we wrote this:

We really need to get Jan a palm pilot. We have no idea what one is but we figure anything that has a pilot must be able to help her. Do you think we can buy one with 2 buttons, 6 pieces of kibble, a cotton swab and whatever change we can find in the couch?

Well, sweet Sassy read of our dilemma and sent Jan a surprise.

Recognize it? It's a palm pilot and Sassy has already entered the important birthdays in July so Jan won't forget them. (She will anyway, but, hey, it's the thought that counts. We're all trying to work around Jan's forgetfulness.)

A big thank you, Sassy, from all of us at JFF. We're so excited we can barely --

What's that, Jan? No, we're not into anything. We're just waiting for you so we can blog. No, you don't have to come in and check on us. We're -

Surprise! It's a palm pilot from Sassy.

Hey, Sassy, Can you believe it? Jan asked what it's for. See how badly she needs this. She forgot her own birthday.

We really need to find her a new memory. You don't know where we can find one, do you?

Cotton Turns 9

Sassy, thank you for coming by and reminding Jan tomorrow is Cotton's 9th birthday. If you hadn't Jan would continue to hog the computer and we would completely miss Cotton's big day.

Cotton, we want to tell you how much we admire your tortietude, even though it often drives us crazy. But without it you wouldn't have lived long enough to grow up and become our big sister. We were glad you were invited to join TATA (Tough A*s Tortie Association) because you are one tough lady with a soft heart. If you missed it, you can read our sister Cotton's story here.

Our good friend Sassy sent you a birthday card. But since Jan's birthday is Thursday, you have to share with her. Just the card, though. (We think you look adorable in that hat, Cotton!)

From Sassy, Momo, Opus & Roscoe. And they're all wearing your photograph, Cotton.

You know Sassy. She loves to bake, so she made plenty of cupcakes. More than enough to go around. So any kitty or woofie that drops by, help yourself. There are more thawing on the kitchen counter.

Sassy sent you this, Cotton. You very own kitty-size bed. Of course, you'll have to share that too, you know. We insist.

Sassy didn't forget Jan. She sent Jan a Funny Farm size bed. This is a terrific gift! It's big enough we can all pile on it at the same time.

Oh, are you serious? Jan intends to sleep in it too? Do you think there will be enough room for her?

Sassy, thank you so much for remembering, even though Jan forgot. We really need to get Jan a palm pilot. We have no idea what one is but we figure anything that has a pilot must be able to help her. Do you think we can buy one with 2 buttons, 6 pieces of kibble, a cotton swab and whatever change we can find in the couch?

We really hope Victor Tabbycat will come by to sing "Hippo Birdie Two Ewes" to you, Cotton. He does the best rendition of that birthday song.

Happy (assigned) 9th Birthday, Cotton!

Oh, and we don't want to forget to wish you a Happy Birthday too, Jan. (Note to Victor Tabbycat: We would advise you to NOT sing the "Hippo" song to Jan. She takes everything literally.)

Emil, Award and Adoptions

Emil of the Cat Realm is missing. In the area where he lives, when a cat doesn't return home overnight, it is often very bad news. But we don't want Karl, Mrs. Oz or their maid and butler to give up hope.

Sassy made this poster. Feel free to display this one which includes the link to the Cat Realm or stop by Sassy's or Cat Blogosphere to pick up a copy.

House of the mostly black cats (Hot MBC) has a very good post on Emil's disappearance. We all do what we believe to be best for our furbabies.

****************************
We received the Daily Blogger award from the Hudson Furkids. As you undoubtedly are aware, we can't always blog every day, but we do our best. And if we remember correctly, it is for those who blog at least 3 times a week. We're not going to start counting back. We're just going to say thank you to Rocky and his family.

We thought it would be fair to pass it on to one kitty and one woofie. We voted to pass this on to Daisy, the Curly Cat. And we picked the Zoo Crew 5 for the woofie award. If either one has already received it, that's okay.

*****************************
Yesterday was a good day. The local Humane Society and the animal shelter hosted a special adoption day. It turned out better than they dared hope. 11 dogs and 1 cat found a new home.

But Jan is sunburned, exhausted and grumpy today. She wants the computer back so she can work on the photos she took yesterday. We'll probably be back in a couple of days since tomorrow is Jan's regular day to take pictures at the shelter.

What's that? Why don't we just use the computer when Jan isn't home? Well.....

We've been banned from using the computer when she's not home. There was an incident. We don't really want to talk about it.

Okay, if you insist.

We are not allowed to touch the computer without supervision, ever since we accidentally blew out the speakers listening to cat-erwalling muzak with the volume turned all the way up. Buddy woof-erwalled right along with it. If he had just shut up we could have played innocent. But no, the neighbors complained about Buddy's bass baying (we know it couldn't have been the cats' vocal range), Merci's soprano and Samaritan's hearty and loud tenor. Plus the weird background music. So Jan knew. She just knew we were responsible. And we're banned.

Marine Video Update

Many of you will remember the video made in Iraq by one Marine of another Marine tossing a puppy off a cliff. We thought you might like an update, in case you haven't already heard about the outcome.

"Lance Cpl. David Motari, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Bay, is 'being processed for separation' from the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps said in a news release. He also received unspecified 'non-judicial punishment.'" Motari was the one identified as the puppy-tosser.

"The second Marine, Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion, also received unspecified "non-judicial" punishment. "

More information is posted here, here and here. We are posting 3 separate news articles because articles are often moved, deleted or archived online.

We are relieved to note the Marine Corp. considered this conduct unbecoming one of their own. We hope both men who were involved have received a psychological evaluation.

As Jan wrote in a letter to the Public Affairs Office of Marine Corps Base Hawaii: This incident concerns me greatly, as does any act of violence against a human or an animal. It is a well-documented fact that animal abuse and human abuse are closely entwined. What I believe is that anyone who would commit such a horrible act as was demonstrated in the video and to laugh at it is not a newcomer to violence. And I'm not referring to what he learned while at war.

And we agree with what HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle wrote to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. "We worry about the psychological stability of those who could perpetrate such vicious acts against the most vulnerable of creatures."

We are grateful there are many military personnel overseas, who despite facing the same fears, frustrations and emotions as these Marines did on their overseas duty, don't torture or kill animals. They help rescue those they can. We have great respect for our military personnel overseas.

We continue to hope Judge Effron, Chief Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, will move to include cruelty to all animals in the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Celebrate Kali

We have lost another furry friend today. We didn't know Kali as well as we did Storm but it was obvious Kali's health was declining and she would soon need help to the bridge. We just didn't think it would be today.

Kali, you have lived a long life with dignity and fiery tortitude (that's tortoiseshell catitude, in case you aren't familiar with the term). We feel the richer for having known you.

Your mom is heartbroken and needs all the comfort we - meaning the blogosphere - can give her. Your brothers and sisters Tyler, Cookie, Sophie and Jake are missing you too. Our tears haven't dried from Storm leaving, but that does not diminish our tears for losing you. You are missed and will be remembered.

Kali - June 14, 2008

Blogging sometimes seems like a little laughter and a lot of tears. We come to care about others, so every loss brings personal pain.

A number of our furry friends have passed recently and although we have left messages for their families on their blogs, we have not mentioned them on ours. So we are going to do that now - to the best of our pitiful memories, as we know there have been more but we can't remember them all at this moment. If we forgot to include yours, please let us know.

Be happy and celebrate the lives of each of these fortunate furbabies because they lived much or all of their years surrounded by such love that when it was their time, those that needed it were helped to the bridge to save them further pain and suffering. Young or old, expected or unexpected, each loss leaves an empty place in our hearts that can not be filled.

Furry Fighter Friday

The Cat Blogosphere has designated today, Friday, June 13th, as Furry Fighter Friday.

We know Storm's humans want today to be a day of celebrating Storm's life, but it is always hard to say good-bye to friends. And Storm has been an inspiration to us. So with tears in our eyes, we bid farewell to our beloved Furry Fighter. We know she is being helped peacefully to the Bridge today (2 p.m. in Britain or 9 a.m. our time - EST), surrounded by the love of her brother Castle, her humans and Ben Vet.

Our friend GentleAnnie made this graphic for Storm.

Storm, You have fought well, showed courage above and beyond, lived longer than expected, and shared your ongoing story in order to encourage other kitties with lymphoma. But this second battle has taken its toll on your body and depleted your strength. We understand it's time for you to rest.

Go in peace and love, sweet Storm. We will miss you!
This graphic is by Zoolatry.

And we will all celebrate your life today with leaky eyes.

If you haven't read it, we recommend you stop by and read Storm's post, "I Won." It is a beautiful tribute to Storm, the Furry Fighter.

Flying Van Spotted

Wow! The magical flying van is really on the move. Asta sighted it over the Hudson River yesterday. And Derby got pictures of it floating down the river after it got caught in heavy rains in Wisconsin. There was no driver.

Fortunately, the van floats well and it is evidently none the worse for the time it spent in all that water. Because we spotted it just a little bit ago flying over the Flint River here in Georgia.

The really interesting thing is that when we spotted it, all the front windows were blacked out so we couldn't see the driver or even if there was a passenger in the front seat. We wonder if whoever stole it has heard the blogosphere is looking for the van and that we all have our cameras in paw to catch a photo.

We really hope the thief/joyrider is apprehended soon and the van returned to Opus & Roscoe. If you see this van, please let Opus & Roscoe know. They are planning a safari with Sassy and Momo kitty before long and they need their traveling van.

Missing Magical Van

Sassy sent us a poster to help alert kitty and pup bloggers that there is a very serious situation in Italy. The magical flying van that carried Opus & Roscoe and their friends on so many exciting adventures is still missing.

We can't bear to consider there might not be any more adventures in the Italian boys' van. So, please, keep your camera handy and your eyes open.

Send any information or recorded sightings to Opus & Roscoe. They really need to find out who stole it and where the van is now.

Thanks, Criz

Notice our new header? We're sort of cheating with it, but we here at JFF don't have template access to make changes. Jan has to do that since she's administrator through another blog. And in case we haven't mentioned it before, Jan isn't exactly tech savvy. She's more like tech sorry.

We asked her to please update our blog so we can use our new header photo properly. We're still using the old template, not the new and "improved" layout. She did agree, even though it would be a loooooot of extra work for her and it's just tooooo hot for heavy lifting (typing).

But first she tested on upsonpets.com which does use layout to see whether she is ready to make changes. You see, she has gotten used to the old template, which Criz claims gave him a headache when he tried to read it. And we don't doubt it did. She updated once but didn't like the layout format and changed back, so her template is now a hodgepodge of old and new and whatever code it takes to make something work.

But she did figure out where to drop the photo code to add it to the header box - which unlike layout, claims not to accept html, by the way. So obviously she's now created chaos in the header too, but, hey, if chewing gum works, try it.

Criz, thank you so much for the beautiful header graphic. We love it and hope you don't mind that it's parked on the old template - at least temporarily.

How the DogPause Bowl Works

Moki has asked for more information on the DogPause bowls, so we thought we would make a separate post to explain it.

This is Merci with her empty bowl.

The idea is to stop a dog - we'll use Buddy for our example here - from scooping food by the mouthful. If you notice, the bowl is more oval than round and divided into half cup sections. The sides are curved and narrow toward the bottom. In order to eat, Buddy has to utilize his tongue. Merci has a narrow nose, Buddy's is wider and Samaritan has a broad nose, yet the bowls are one-size-fits-all. Now, we eat dry food but the concept would be the same for canned food.

In addition, the bowl is designed so if Buddy tries to eat too fast, the bowl moves and he has to reposition himself.

At this time, a bowl for cats is still in the development stage, but you can read more about the dog bowl at www.dogpausebowl.com.

You can read our original post here or yesterday's update here.

We hope this answers your question, Moki. And thanks for asking.

DogPause and Award

We did a recent post on DogPause bowls and we want to do an update.

Buddy has always inhaled his food without chewing and then shoved another dog out of his way to steal food. Mealtimes have not been fun these past 3 years. But these bowls have made such a difference! Buddy still manages to eat at a more rapid pace than the others, and he still hasn't gotten the hang of chewing his food, but he has calmed down noticeably within the short time we've been using these bowls.

This morning, Buddy finished his meal, watched Samaritan eat, licked Merci's bowl clean, wandered over to drink some water and left the room. That's a first.

One of the possible side effects of eating too rapidly is bloat. At best, gas - and the first year of Buddy's life, Buddy's gas could clear a room very quickly! Jan is happy to finally find a way to slow Buddy down at mealtime. (She has not been paid to endorse these bowls.)

************************

Thank you CrizCats for sharing this award. We would like to pass it on to the multi-talented and fun Sassy, the magical van driving Italians Opus and Roscoe, the humorous Dr. Tweety & da Fab Five, and sweet Poppy Q.

Birthdays and Friendship

Our good friend Sassy stopped by last night and discovered Crystal turned 10 on June 1, although we were late posting it. She immediately baked Crystal some cupcakes to share with any kitty, pup, hamster, rabbit or .... So help yourself. There are plenty.

Sassy, Momo, Opus & Roscoe sent this beautiful birthday card.

And Sassy sent over this bag of kitty presents. Percy wanted to dig right in and check out everything for Crystal (he's young and impetuous) but Samaritan threatened to sit on him if he did.

Sassy threw Rusty and Samaritan a big surprise party in March. Cotton's birthday is later this month. Cameron, Merci and Percy will all get a turn in July. So Crystal gets to open his own gift bag!

And Gentle Annie, Mollie & the Gypsy dropped by this morning with a card for Crystal. Thank you, KC.

Crystal: I just wanted to thank everyone for thinking of me. Jan isn't big on celebrations but she's always here for me, so I guess you could say she gives me daily "presence."

********************
JFF: Oh, and speaking of Sassy, she posted photos yesterday of eyes for visitors to guess which kitty they belonged to. No one recognized our own Cameron's eyes in one picture. We are ashamed to admit we didn't recognize him either. And we see him daily. Cameron, we are sorry. Please forgive us.

Cameron: I would never forgive any of you, except I didn't recognize me either. I guess I just have a plain and indistinguishable face. Sigh.

Cotton: Oh, Cameron, that's not true. You are a handsome tuxie. You just don't wear your tux on your face where others can see it.

*******************
This is the same photo of Crystal we posted yesterday, but ....
notice anything different about it?

CrizCats made us a logo for our online photographs. We'll have to play around with it to find how to size it properly on photos, but isn't it neat? Thank you, Criz! We love it.

Crystal Is Ten

Oh, Crystal, we are so sorry we didn't post about you on your special day. Jan wanted to combine your birthday with Cotton's, but hers is later in the month. You have been a loyal and loving ginger. You deserve a day all your own. So we're giving it to you, albeit belatedly.

You were so tiny when someone threw you and your twin out. You two went up and down the street trying to get someone to take you home. Somewhere along the way, you lost your twin.

Jan heard you crying outside her bedroom window. When she saw you, she stopped on a step and you raced over and leaped high into the air to reach her. Only you were too small and you crashed into the steps. So, of course, there was no way Jan was going to leave you there on the ground. She picked you up, brought you inside and broke her commitment that Jenny and Grayce would be the last animals she rescued.

She has never regretted taking you in. You immediately bonded with Grayce (it was not a mutual bond at first!) and were her closest companion until she died. To this day, your favorite sleeping spot is on Jan's pillow, occasionally reaching out to pat her face as you purr.

Jan doesn't know the exact date you were born but she gave you an approximate date - June 1st. A very Happy Belated Birthday to you, our friend and brother.

Percy has taken your place as the alpha kitty, but you will always be Jan's number 1 greeter when company comes. We hope to have many more happy, healthy years together.

Teeth and Fleas

Yes, we do realize this is a strange title. Teeth and fleas don't have anything in common, do they? Well, actually they often do. Your vet.

This is not to knock your vet. There are many good vets who care about their patients and will work with your humans to do everything possible to help you to get well or to stay well.

But since we don't have a voice or a vote at the vet's, it is each human's responsibility to make a wise and informed final decision on what is done for us. There's a lot they won't understand and they just have to rely on a vet's expertise, but in non-emergency/non-lifethreatening visits, decisions will arise such as which vaccinations we should receive.

Some of you are already aware of the current controversy over some vaccines and their repeated use in relation to cancer. If your human isn't already aware, this is only one of many sites on the pet vaccination controversy.

Yesterday Jan's friend Mark sent her a link to one she'd never heard of. Dog dental vaccine. (From what we can find, there is not yet one for cats, since the bacteria in a cat's mouth is different from a dog's.) It has evidently been around for a year or so and is now being heavily promoted.

We have been reading a number of kitty and woofie blogs recently where they were visiting the vet for dental cleaning or tooth removal. We can only imagine the shock of one poor kitty mom who had no notification the vet intended to take out 7 of her kitty's teeth. Aside from the horror of her furbaby losing 7 teeth, from some of the prices other cat owners are saying they were charged, the increase to the bill was likely several hundred dollars. (Jan would faint!)

So we got to thinking, since pet tooth removal is happening more often, how willing would humans be to pay for a vaccine to save them green papers and save their furbaby's teeth? So we checked the link to the vaccine company. Although we don't believe we want to try the vaccine, the information looks innocuous.

But wait, Jan's friend emailed her back telling her to check the MSD info. We hijacked her email and scrolled down the site page. At the bottom is the Material Safety Data Sheet link. If you can't open this link, just use the link to the vaccine company and scroll down.

What? Formaldehyde! Who injects dogs - or any living being - with formaldehyde? It's a potential cancer hazard!

Mark further emailed: My major was chemistry. Formaldehyde is a semi cyclic (unattached cycle) hydrocarbon because it's missing a connective molecule like a halo benzoic or halogen ion. That crap is interactive degenerative with LIFE.

Okay, we admit we have no idea what that means. Except for the degenerative with life part. (Degenerative: Of illness; marked by gradual deterioration of organs and cells along with loss of function.) Jan says she would never allow us to be injected with formaldehyde, but, unfortunately, if a vet ever suggested we should have the vaccine, the word "formaldehyde" would never be mentioned by the vet.

And now for the fleas. There has been an email circulating on the dangers of the new flea product Promeris which is available only from your vet. If you check snopes.com or other rumor sites, the validity of this is still unresolved. But on About.com there is a link in the comments below the email to a statement confirming the incident from Fort Dodge, manufacturer of the medication. There are other Promeris complaints on the internet. Some vets will not carry the product. Others are waiting to see how the new product does over time.

Jan had a problem last year with a couple of us and Advantage. She doesn't intend to try Promeris on any of us, so we aren't pro or con from personal experience. But we hope any human planning to use it - or any other potentially toxic product - on their furbaby will do some research and make an informed decision.

DogPause Bowls

Buddy and Samaritan like to eat! Anything and everything, whether their own food or another's. So mealtimes have long gone something like this:

Jan sets a bowl down in front of Buddy and says, "Wait!" He lies down with his nose hovering directly over the food. She does the same with Samaritan and he lies down in front of his bowl. She repeats the same steps with Merci and Merci stands there looking at Jan, as if to say, Who me? She does this twice a day. She doesn't ever seem to believe Jan expects her to follow a command.

When Merci finally obeys, Jan says, "Okay" and they all stand up. Buddy scoops his food into his mouth as fast as he can. He did finally learn to chew a few pieces on occasion. If Jan isn't fully alert, he finishes his food and races to shove Samaritan's nose out of his bowl. Samaritan, still hungry, crosses the room and takes over Merci's meal. Merci retires under the couch.

Jan used to set Buddy's bowl on a round cat scratching post and toss 3 little rocks in with his food (she washed the rocks daily) to try to slow him down and save him from indigestion - or worse! He couldn't scoop with the rocks but they had little effect on his speed. Samaritan and Merci learned to eat faster.

Then Jan read about the DogPause bowl. She watched the video. Buddy makes Hank look like a slow eater! Would one of those bowls actually help slow Buddy down, for his own sake as well as Samaritan's and Merci's?

Have I got a test subject for you! she thought. And she contacted the company.

Last week JFF received a package.

What? You guys sniffed my Fresh Step litter when it arrived. Turnabout is only fair.

Dinner is measured and ready to be served.

Waiting for the it's okay to eat signal.

Mmmmm. It tastes the same.

Hey, I need a bigger bowl. Or a smaller nose.

Oops. Merci gets the smallest portion. Guess we should have taken her picture first.

Jan loves these bowls. Buddy still finishes first but he is eating at a healthier pace. That should be the end of it, right?

Well, Samaritan has suddenly slowed to a crawl. Jan returned to feeding him out of his old bowl for a couple of days, thinking his nose must be too wide to eat properly. But his nose is fine. He's just resumed his old habit of enjoying his food while Jan keeps Buddy at bay.

And Merci? Well, Jan is ready to tie her to a table leg for meals. She has resumed her old habit of standing in the living room and looking into the kitchen. When she finally lies down and Jan says "okay," she meanders in, carefully selects one morsel of food and waltzes back to the living room, out of sight. She will repeat this at least once more per meal before she stays and eats from one pocket at a time while Jan holds off the other dogs.

3 dogs of diverse sizes and appetites does not make for smooth mealtimes. But Jan really likes these DogPause bowls. Her biggest mealtime concern has been Buddy inhaling his own food and causing the other two to gobble their meals. These new bowls seem to be helping them to enjoy eating at their own pace.

We - Buddy, Samaritan and Merci - give these new bowls four (4) thumbs up. Um, we mean four (4) paws up.

You can read about how this bowl was invented here and/or see the video of Hank, the slower than Buddy eater here.

Ohio Pit Bull Ban Change

Faith left a message on our May 29 post, "Stop the Pit Bull Ban," to let everyone know there is a change in the proposed Ohio state law.

We are really happy to hear that. We understand humans want to be safe and to keep their children safe, but no breed should be singled out to be killed en masse.

We missed the news item yesterday, but Faith sent the link to a short news item on the proposed change. You can read it here.
