Fainting Goat Cats

No, the title is not a joke. We never heard of myotonia congenita, or fainting goat syndrome, in cats. It's rare in dogs and cats.

The kittens can walk but cannot run or jump - and we assume they can not play. At the slightest sound, they fall over in a rigid paralysis which lasts about a minute.

The cuties in this video are Charlie and Spike (black and white). Sadly, Spike died today from respiratory failure.

We are incensed that YouTube comments had to be disabled for this video because of insensitive comments. That is one thing we dislike about many web sites, the quality of a number of the comments. The ability to be nasty seems to outweigh common sense for too many. This makes us even prouder of the pet blogging community, which is known for uplifting and supporting one another.

To Charlie and Spike's human:  If you ever run across this post, we'd like you to know how sad we are for you loss.

And thank you, Evelyn, for introducing us.  We know you have a great heart for kitties with a disability.

  1. Poor kitties. We so agree with you about some of the comments being posted in some popular websites. They are insensitive and downright rude. We feel sad and sorry for those humans who allow themselves to be degraded by the comments they make.

People can be so stupid , so insensitive, so uncaring.

It is just 'their' way of feeling 'important' -

Too bad it only proves how stupid they are -

  5. oh my we have never heard of this either. we are so sorry to hear that spike has gone to the bridge.

it is s sad that really popular websites attract very insensitive commentary. we feel this happens because the folks are protected by a sense of anonymity. how horrible that the loving pawrents of these two were subjected to this type of abuse.

  6. Oh, that is so heartbreakingly sad. Poor little sweeties!
Has any research been done about the cause of this congenital malady?

It is terrible the way some people can be heartless and cruel and make nasty comments about such sad ailments happening to innocent creatures. They just need to know that karma is a cruel taskmaster--no one escapes!

We are so sorry to hear that Spike went to the bridge. Poor little fellow. I know he will be just fine over there, and get to run and play to his heart's content with all the other kitteh friends there waiting to welcome him.

Our sincere condolences to the owners.

  8. So sweet and so sad. It hurts to watch them and that they can't have a normal life. So sorry that Spike has passed. I too have never heard of this disease.

Yes, I agree about the Catblogosphere. It's so wonderful how everyone sticks together and are there for each other when a precious pet passes or is sick.

  10. I'm thinking of disabling comments on one of my videos (it's a joke one of me playing with Honey on a Sun morning with a hoop and dancing madly around to music) - coz I get so many horrible, nasty, racist and sexual harrassment comments on it that it really upsets me. I know people say you should just ignore it but it's hard to when you wake up in the morning and there are several messages in your Inbox with comments from people calling you thing "Asian XXX" and F-words and claiming I'm a drunk or a drug addict - or that I'm abusing Honey. It seems that people just cannot conceive of anyone being happy and uninhibited without the use of illegal substances!!!

  12. Oh poor poor little Spike!! Awwww what an illness!! I've not heard of such a thing and must look it up - it sounds so dreadful! I'm hoping that it'll decrease maybe as Charlie gets older? Poor Spike and Charlie!! I'd love to send tons of hugs and healing purrs to their humans!

I so despair when I read some comments on YouTube and other sites cos the nasty ones are just horrid. I think that's why I prefer blogging but you need youtube to upload clips so what can you do?!?

Hugs and lots of purrs to all the nice people and their pets and animals! Take care

  16. How dreadful. It's horrible that we still know so little about the way our bodies work - or kitty bodies for that matter.
