Farewell, Crystal

My sweet and handsome Crystal passed away early this morning, sometime between 1:30 and 4:00 am. He's been failing for a while now, but I didn't want to post about it. Yesterday, I could see he was tired and I told him repeatedly I didn't mind taking care of him but it was okay to leave now. So I wasn't surprised to find he was gone when I got up to check on him.

I went back to bed but couldn't sleep, just lay still until the phone rang. My brother is working today. There was no one to help bury Crystal.

As soon as I got off the phone, Buddy had a seizure.

After taking the dogs on a very short walk while wearing a pair of bedroom slippers, I put on the extra large white sneakers I just bought to accommodate my swollen toe in an emergency and dug a grave in the red Georgia clay. The ground is soaked with rainwater, so I was able to manage. Crystal lies beside his old friends Jenny and Grayce.

To make the day even more painful, I walked onto the wet front porch in my socks to knock mud off the shoes. And then I accidentally bumped a large spray bottle off a table. It landed squarely on the infected part of the unprotected toe. I have lost count of the number of traumas to that toe since a week ago Friday. The others have been courtesy of Buddy and Sam. I don't know how I am going to walk the dogs at all now since it is cold and raining and I can only get my foot into a sock.

Between the toe pain and Crystal, losing Crystal hurts the worst How appropriate the day should be cold, wet and dreary. Crystal was a bright spot in my life for 11 years and it's going to take some time to get used to losing him. So if I don't post for a while or answer questions .... Maybe I'll post in a day or two on Crystal, but perhaps not. We'll see.

Although we already did a post earlier today, Crystal's passing rates a special post.

I am sure that he has met up with Jenny and the others and that they are having a wonderful time together. I hope that you toe stops getting traumatized and can begin to heal. Do you have any sandals that you can wear to walk the dogs?

  46. Jan, we are all so sorry to hear about Crystal going to the bridge. There is never a right time to lose a beloved pet, but at least Crystal was able to go when the time was right for him, unaided.

    When my beautiful cat Henry (1985 ~2004) was ready to die, I knew in my heart too. I held hom gently on my lap and talked to him about how wonderful and important he had been in my life ~ and then I too gave him permission to go, when he was ready.

    So I do believe that Crystal understood and was able to go when it was right for him. I hope you can be comforted by that thought. RIP Crystal.

    Sorry about your foot too. ((((((hugs))))))

  70. We are so sorry for your loss.
    A friend of our just lost her cat of 17 years and we sent her this little poem that we found;

    Four Feet in Heaven
    Your favorite chair is vacant now...
    No eager purrs to greet me.
    No softly padded paws to run
    Ecstatically to meet me.

    No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
    Will say it's time for feeding.
    I've put away your bowl, and all
    The things you won't be needing;

    But I will miss you little friend,
    For I could never measure
    The happiness you brought me,
    The comfort and the pleasure.

    And since God put you here to share
    In earthly joy and sorrow;
    I'm sure there'll be a place for you
    In Heaven's bright tomorrow...

  111. Jan,
    We are so incredibly sorry for your loss. Once again, disconnected from the computer, so we did not see this until now.
    Our tears and prayers go out to all of you.
    It is never an easy task to let our little friends go and know that we will never see or touch or be comforted by them.
    Only in dreams or in spirit do they return.
    We love you,
    Madeline, Dr Tweety, Iris, Maximillian, Delilah, and Aintie Stinkie

  113. Ms Jan,
    We are so sorry to hear of Crystal's passing to The Bridge. We are sure that you were the center of his life. Your dedication to all the zanies on the funny farm is reknown worldwide. Our dad ays that he gave the same advice to Old Bear Dog that you gave to Crystal, it's all right to go if it's time. We are so very sorry for your loss but know that Crystal enjoyed a happy life as a member of your Funny Farm. He is a most beloved kitty.

  114. Oh dear. We just learned of Crystal's passing and are so sorry. Crystal was a very fine looking cat. that is a very nice picture of him you posted. We are very sorry for your loss. I think it was really good that you told Crystal he could leave if he wanted.

    As for the weather, I agree it was appropriate for it to be cold, wet and dreary. If it had been sunny, it wouldn't have felt right.
