This Intruder Chews

puppy
Well, well, well, look at the intruder that wandered into our pen.  We weren't going to post today but since we'll be posting some of these photos on facebook, we decided we'd do a quick post.

This little guy appears to be about 6 - 8 weeks old.  Likely a beagle or daschund mix. No, he isn't staying.  At least not longer than the weekend.  And, no, Jan did not bring him home.  Nor did he follow us home.

Jan was drinking coffee and talking long distance to a friend this morning when she saw a car pull over to our side of the road and slow down.  It stopped and a man got out carrying a puppy.  He asked if she recognized it.  Said he'd found it in the road in front of Walgreens and was looking for the owner.  When Jan said no, he looked disappointed, pointed across the street and said, "The lady over there told me there's a lady over here who would take it in and find the owner.  Isn't that you?"

You know what Jan did, don't you?  She laughed, said, "Here, give him to me," and brought him into our home.  Can you believe that.  She sat down to finish her phone conversation and we dogs all rushed over to check him out.  So the little guy did his one good deed of the day.  He got even with Jan for us.  He peed all over her leg.

Other than that he's been a little pest.  He wants to play with us, not with toys.  We have to keep telling him we're older, it's hot and humid, and while he's staying here, he has to respect our boundaries. He doesn't bother the cats, though.

Sam, puppy, Merci
Not that he pays attention.  He's already taken over our pen.  And he's wearing Merci's brand new never-worm collar and using one of our leashes.  Jan walked him around the neighborhood and asked people if they have seen him before but no one has - so far.  She's going to keep trying.

Jan is petsitting for a neighbor this weekend, so she needs to be able to leave us all alone for short periods while protecting furniture and appliances from little chewpup. (He even chewed on the bathroom sink turn off valve.) The nice lady, Kay, from the Humane Society loaned us a crate for the weekend.  This should be interesting.

puppy, Sam
We know most of our readers don't live in our area, but we just really want to do whatever we can to find his owner ASAP before the animal shelter opens on Monday.  At least, we sure hope he has an owner and wasn't dumped.

Update:  Jan named him Luke.

Rusty Rambles

Hey, Rusty here.  Happy Monday to you.  It's rainy, cold and dreary and but we're sacked out in front of the heaters trying to "unchill."  Yes, I'm aware there is no such word but it's descriptive so I'm adding it to the Funny Farmer dictionary.

We're sending out some purrs and woofs to Jan's minister who is having (or has already had) partial knee replacement surgery this morning.  I was going to say how lucky we are not to have knees to need surgery, but Jan ruined my day by saying cats and dogs have 2 knees and knee pain is a common cause of lameness in us furries.  Before you gush about how brilliant Jan is she only learned this three minutes ago.

I can't figure out whether the number of cats lost in transit by airplane is climbing or if the numbers remain the same but lost animals are getting more publicity.  We were glad to read that at least one airline takes a missing pet seriously!  When Wenty's empty carrier arrived in Seattle without her, Alaska Airlines didn't drag their feet and lose valuable time.  They went to great lengths to help find Wenty.  And Wenty was found!

"Using everything from *Karma’s nose, high power spotlights, a search camera, an amplified listening device, and digital wildlife cameras, MPP conducted a detailed “area search.” Alaska Airlines gave the team unrestricted access to the baggage area and the tarmac area."  (*Karma is a Missing Pet Partnership cat detection dog.)

You can read the rest of  "Alaska Air Stops at  Nothing to Find Lost Cat'" on Mousebreath.  After some of the horror stories we have read on lost cats entrusted to an airline, this was a breath of fresh air.  Missing pets should be taken seriously.  Kudos to Alaska Airlines!

On a different subject, this title is a mouthful but we suggest you read it, especially if you are a newbie to blogging. There are a lot of folks out there who are anxious to take advantage of bloggers. Our Reading Lists, Hijacked By Spammers, Who Have Conned The Owners Of Blogs That We Follow.

Don't be conned by spammers.  They are numerous and they are sneaky, so we furries need to be on our paws and remain smarter than they are.

Cat curiosity aroused: We've had a couple of contacts in the past few months asking if we take text ads on our blog and when we ask for more information, we're told all we have to do is to put their ad link in a post or two for them - not a new post, a prior post. This doesn't make any sense to us and doesn't seem particularly legitimate, so we've turned them down. But our whiskers are twitching to know why anyone would even ask. There must be some advantage to someone wanting to pay to have an ad placed in a "used" post or two, but we can't figure out what they get out of it. So we thought we'd ask our more knowledgeable readers if any of you know why someone would want to pay to "hide" an ad in an old post.

That's all the news I have for today.  We have photos and a post or two to catch up on but Jan hasn't downloaded them from the camera yet.  Perhaps by spring?

I'm going back to my blankie in front of the gas heater now and catch some zzzzzzzs.

Help Find Ben Manning, Update

We have just read the very sad update on Ben the Rotti's blog.

Ben Manning's body has been recovered from the River Calder. Please stop by Ben the Rotti's and leave a message of comfort for the family. It doesn't matter that you don't know them. It only matters they know you care. Ben the Rotti's family is hurting too, as they are part of the same community and a 17-year-old has lost his life.

There is a young man missing in England and so far the publicity has only been local, so we are joining other bloggers around the world to put his face and information out there.

Clicking on the photo should enlarge it. For further details, visit Ben the Rotti's blog. Ben Manning is from Ben the Rotti's area.

And then please post, tweet, Facebook, whatever means available to pass on the link to Ben the Rotti's blog post where the information is being coordinated. Someone knows what happened to him.

Chihuahua Update and AniMeals

We would like to give you a postive update on the 2 Chihuahua's dumped at the mill on Sunday, June 21. ( Click to read "What Were You Thinking".) Unfortunately, we can't. We do stop at the mill every morning when we walk Jan and she asks about them. Last Friday we were told the tan and white one was spotted but he scooted under buildings and got around so fast they couldn't corner it long enough to call Animal Control.

This morning we met the boss over the workers there. (I, Buddy, howled at him when he shook Jan's hand and introduced himself. Nobody shakes her hand but Merci, Sam and myself! Not without our permission and he didn't ask us. And by the way, he told Jan he used to have a Boxer, but last year while he was mixing paint in his back yard, a van pulled up out front and drove off with his dog. Watch your pets!) He said the Chihuahua growled at them whenever they got close to it and they lost it when it sped across the road and disappeared into the bushes. There is no way to find him in that jungle!

So Jan suggested they call Animal Control and ask for a trap to be set up in the shade. It's possibly the only way the tan and white dog will be captured. We are all very sad because the chocolate Chihuahua has not been seen since that first night. It was protective of this tan and white one, but was so hyper it could not be still or quiet. It was here, there, up, down, back and forth, barking all the while. With the lack of water in that high heat and humidity, Jan fears the dog died of heat stroke.

For any of you who missed the blurb on the Cat Blogosphere the other day, we'd like to introduce you to AniMeals. AniMeals.com is an animal food bank located in Missoula, MT. They help feed hungry animals and facilitate adoptions for abandoned pets. They are short on medicine, food, money, as they are overloaded with 25 adult cats and 46 kittens. So many animals end up at a shelter because their owner dies. Read the very short bio of Fifi and Mrs. Arbuncle, whose owner took his own life but couldn't/didn't take theirs too. They are among the cats needing a home. Click to visit thei AniMeals blog. Also check them out on YouTube. And if you can help in some way .....

There is some very good news. Laska, the Siberian that ran away from his foster home last week is back home again. You can read about Laska and lots of other news in various posts at Khyra's Khorner blog.

We are very sad for Huskee & Hershey's mom and dad. They lost their first baby a year ago and now they have lost their second. We can not imagine their pain! If you haven't stopped by to leave a word of support, we hope you will do so today.

Merci's prize from the SuppliesJust4Pets.com modeling contest arrived a little while ago but we haven't even seen what's in the box yet. We'll post on it soon.

Roscoe and Awards

This is Roscoe. He is much smaller than any our cats but he pees more often than all of them together. He is the reason Jan is running so far behind today and hasn't already gotten this post up.

We were heading home after our morning walk today. Jan was behaving herself, for once. About 2 blocks ahead we saw a white van in front of our house. It was parked on the wrong side of the road at the corner, which is how we knew it was in front of our home. It looked familiar.

It backed up and turned onto the road we were walking and when it reached us, it pulled over. It was our friend Mr. Project Manager-for-dismantling-the-mill and he brought us a present. Well, it wasn't a present for us to keep, just to help. Like Barkley, this little dog was found in the mill.

We couldn't handle walking Jan while she was carrying this present, so Mr. P.M. drove the little guy home for us. Jan unhooked our leashes and went outside to get the little guy. He wasn't the least afraid of us jumping up and sniffing him, or when Jan put him on the floor. He immediately set to peeing - a drop here, a drop there, a stream there. It was a bit cold in here but we think he was nervous!

Jan called the shelter. She called the radio station so they could announce the found dog. And then she set off without us. Just clipped a leash to his collar and didn't come back for forever and a half. She walked him over our route, knocked on doors, questioned strangers, and even walked him up and down streets she's never walked us. Nobody recognized him.

So back they came and Jan sat down at the computer with his leash around her arm so he couldn't wander off and pee. An hour or two later, we announced the arrival of his owner before she was even out of her van. Jan grabbed him up and walked outside. His mom swooped up the steps, crying, "Roscoe!" They were very glad to see each other.

He'd slipped through the fence and wandered over into the mill. That's a very dangerous place for any dog. We're very glad he was found before anything happened to him.

Recently Gentle Annie (you met her March 5th at Rusty & Samaritan's surprise birthday party) made us a special award, which we get to pass on. She doesn't have a blog but she does have a website. We hope you will go visit her at www.gentleannie2.com.

We would like to pass this Special Site Award on to Wildcats 3's the Cat/Dog Log. They do posts on educational subjects such as pet health and nutrition, or "Don't support animal testing," as well as fun topics.

And Felinesopher gave us the wonderful Golden Paw award, created by Ruis for: It is given to cats, dogs or any animal or human bean that have lent a special helping paw/hand to another cat, dog, animal or human bean. You may give this award to as many individuals as you want, to thank them for lending you a helping paw/hand. If you don't need it now, save it, and you can give it when needed.

We would like to hold this one for a while. We seem to have caught Jan's disease - memory loss. We can't remember any names.

********************************
As we were writing this, we popped over to see how Petey is doing and we are sorry to see he has passed away.

Smudge isn't doing well.

Amici hasn't posted since February 23rd. We sure hope his seizures have stopped!

There are so many sick kitties and doggies to remember.

Baby Is Back

Just read the post that Baby is home. You can read the story on Boy & Baby. The story began on February 11 and runs through the Monday the 18th.

Karl of the Cat Realm left a message on the last post that Bean the pitbull was found! We don't know who he is but we're glad. And we thought we would add him (or is Bean a girl?) for those who are concerned.

Update: Karl left Bean's url which is added above. And he let us know Bean is a girl.
