MERCI: Hey, look what followed us home Sunday night.
SAM: We're not joking. This little doxie mix did follow Merci and I home when we walked Jan Sunday evening.
MERCI: And we're not happy about it. We recognize her. Remember the mean territorial dog that has been coming after us on our walks? We posted about him in Vinegar and Hot Pepper back in February.
SAM: Well, shortly after that first encounter, a small doxie started running around there too, but that one was scared of everything and didn't bother us. We did notice when the woman was leaving she would holler and a doxie would come running.
MERCI: Around here if a person is evicted or leaves things behind, it is piled out by the curb and people going by stop to pick through it and take what they want. There was such a pile in front of that house Saturday morning. That always makes Jan sad.
SAM: I told this pup we didn't want her company but she ignored my growls and came anyway. And Jan was worried about her having been left behind when the tenant moved. There are at least one coyote and one fox in this area. (We met Miss Fox Saturday evening and Mr. Coyote last summer.)
BUDDY: Marcus and I weren't thrilled when this stranger walked in but she just wants to eat, play and feel secure so she doesn't bother me.
MARCUS: Well, I don't like her! I was locked in the crate when she came in, which was a bad start, and then she wanted to play while I was playing soccer. When I tried to play with her, she'd run off screaming like I was killing her.
BUDDY: Yes, she is afraid of everything but you didn't have to keep beating her up. Now she's terrified of you.
MERCI: Jan called around to try to find someone who could take the dog in overnight so she wouldn't have to be afraid or locked in a crate, but no one had any room.
SAM: I don't want her here but I do feel kind of sorry for her. Jan is going to have to call city Animal Control in the morning and send her to the shelter. She will be safer there than on the streets. Miss Peggy is already working to find a rescue to take her when her time will be up.
MERCI: I spent some time in the shelter before I came to live here. I hope this doxie finds a home right away.
SAM: I wonder what happened to the mean, territorial dog? Did they abandon him too?
UPDATE: The sweet Miss Doxie is on her way to the shelter and hopefully to a better life!

Another Intruder
Well, it's after midnight this morning and we're trying to do a fast post. Wednesday was one of those days. The computer wouldn't finish loading in the morning. We spent the afternoon trying to download elusive Windows updates. (Don't even ask!) We never did get to the Christmas card emails we intended to send out.
By sundown we dogs hadn't even given Jan her evening walk. But there was more to come - a knock at the door. Two neighbor boys wanting to know if Jan was missing a puppy. Nope!
Boys: "We've been asking around and no one knows who this puppy belongs to."
Jan: "What are you going to do with it?"
Boys: "We'll have to take it home and knock on some more doors after school tomorrow." (Good idea. Not safe to go knocking on doors after dark.)
Jan: "Which one of you is taking it home?"
One Boy: "I can't."
Other Boy: "I can't either."
Jan: "So what are you going to do with it?"
The conversation was longer. We just hit the highlights. It dropped into the 20s or low 30s last night and will again tonight. The boys promised to go knocking on doors after they get home from school activities tomorrow. Jan doesn't have much hope the boys will keep their word, but sometimes kids do the right thing.
Meanwhile, we've got an intruder here, sleeping on our beds, drinking out of our water bowls, and playing with our toys.
We're going to see if we can find some folks around here who will post his photo on Facebook tomorrow. It's too late tonight. We hope he has an owner because we can't keep him.
He spent the evening crying, trying to get us old timers to play, trying to steal Jan's dinner, tripping her and sleeping cuddled against her feet. In between he played with some of our toys, including Mr. Squirrel. Now that he's rested, we figure it's going to be a long night for Jan.
We hope the puppy is properly thankful Jan took him in temporarily and we didn't chase him out. Jan will be very thankful when he's safely home.
We'll be joining PepiSmartDog's Thankful Thursday blog hop.

This Intruder Chews

This little guy appears to be about 6 - 8 weeks old. Likely a beagle or daschund mix. No, he isn't staying. At least not longer than the weekend. And, no, Jan did not bring him home. Nor did he follow us home.
Jan was drinking coffee and talking long distance to a friend this morning when she saw a car pull over to our side of the road and slow down. It stopped and a man got out carrying a puppy. He asked if she recognized it. Said he'd found it in the road in front of Walgreens and was looking for the owner. When Jan said no, he looked disappointed, pointed across the street and said, "The lady over there told me there's a lady over here who would take it in and find the owner. Isn't that you?"

You know what Jan did, don't you? She laughed, said, "Here, give him to me," and brought him into our home. Can you believe that. She sat down to finish her phone conversation and we dogs all rushed over to check him out. So the little guy did his one good deed of the day. He got even with Jan for us. He peed all over her leg.
Other than that he's been a little pest. He wants to play with us, not with toys. We have to keep telling him we're older, it's hot and humid, and while he's staying here, he has to respect our boundaries. He doesn't bother the cats, though.

Kujo Come Home
Hey, Sam, Merci & Buddy here. We were going to take the day off after a busy weekend but we came across something we thought should be posted. We made Jan do the full circuit, even though it's still quite warm, so while she's catching her breath, we're typing as fast as our paws can manage.
Kujo disappeared nearly a year ago but his owner is still diligently searching for him within a 60-mile radius. We met Debbie this afternoon while we were walking Jan and decided we would post his Missing flyer here. As she said, a dog taken from one side of town is often taken to the other which is why she is searching in our area too. And one never knows how far a dog might travel in 11 months, whether on its own or in transport by humans.
We hope Kujo will be home before long.
