Lighten Up, PETA

We were rushing to try to do an Easter post. And then we ran across this article and got ticked off.

Biden's Puppy Breeder: "Never, Never, Never Again"
Woman is vilified for selling a pedigreed pup to the Bidens.

Fifteen minutes of fame turned into four months of bitter remorse for the Chester County woman who sold the Bidens their adorable little German shepherd puppy.

Linda Brown's been investigated, scorned and had her life threatened.

"I thought when Joe Biden bought a puppy from me, what an honor," Brown told the Daily Local News. "Out of millions of breeders in the country, in the world, he picked me."

That was December.

When the story got out, Brown faced backlash from pet lovers who thought the Bidens should have opted for a shelter over a breeder to find their new puppy.

PETA seized the moment as an opportunity to blame the killing of shelter animals on people who buy from breeders. The organization's TV commercial, "Buy One, Get One Killed" ran in Delaware after the Biden puppy story made headlines.

What a load of crap. Sorry, but that's what it is. Who gave PETA or any other animal activist group the idea they can speak for everyone? Or they can humiliate or harass a breeder? We don't know anything about this breeder, but we do believe a legitimate breeder has a right to run a licensed business.

We would like to see every shelter animal adopted, but a shelter animal is not right for everyone, for any number of reasons. For any group of fanatics to cause a breeder to be harassed is beyond rationality.

We feel sad for the woman who has received death threats from animal activists and has had to shell out thousands of dollars in legal fees to protect herself and her business from somewhat ridiculous citations. If the woman is running a "puppy mill," there would be no need to invent charges.

The woman should be left in peace. She is not responsible for the millions of animals killed in shelters every year. Some humans have just lost all common sense.

Our advice? Adopt a shelter animal. Or adopt from a reputable breeder. But don't fall victim to the inferred lie that if all breeders are closed down, the shelters will close too.

  1. I'm glad you wrote about this. It raised my hackles too. (Yes, humans have hackles)

Sadly it isn't just PETA loonies who have taken up the anti-breeder rhetoric, but a lot of well-meaning dog lovers. Reputable breeders do a lot for the dog world and people should not be guilted into adopting a shelter dog if it isn't for them.

Shelter dogs can have a lot of problems and if the person isn't prepared to handle the problems, the dog is put back into the shelter and the person has to experience a lot of unnecessary guilt.

I saw a survey when Biden got his dog and most people who responded thought it was his dog and he had the right to get it where he wanted.

Let people get their dogs from wherever they want.

  2. That poor woman. Doesn't Peta understand that many breeders really are reputable and will do anything for the dogs they breed? How horrible for her.

  3. Yeah. I'm all for shelter adoptions, but you can't get that militant about it. Doesn't solve anything.

  4. Great post - we missed all of the drama over here. Like Pablo, we're in favour of shelter adoptions, but we don't want to see reputable breeders harassed for no good reason. Thanks for posting this,

  6. Well said! The same goes for cat breeders too. My mom says that sometimes people have said things to her because she chose to get a purebred Persian and didn't adopt a shelter kitty. We think they mean well, but it still hurts.

  8. Thanks for a great post JFF. We knows some really nice breeders of all sorts of animals and they all love the animals they breed. And many of them do breed rescue or donate to shelters. Reputable breeders are not the problem. And of course Biden had the right to get his dog from a breeder if he wanted. After all Biden knew what he wanted and what would fit in with his lifestyle. Far better that he buy a suitable dog from a breeder then get an unsuitalbe dog from a shelter and wind up returning it. ~S,S,C & F

  10. Both our kittehs are rescues, but the dog came from a reputable breeder. A very well known one. I don't care for the way she takes care of her animals- however, i wouldn't not go to a breeder again.

We think a shelter pup will be our next. The problem with some breeders- even if reputable- they can lie. Right to your face. They can be very very controlling. I've known many many people who have been lied to by breeders. You have to be really careful. But- you have to be careful with shelter animals as well- you don't know temperament before you get them, what they've been through.

It's ridiculous for PETA to get involved in everything though. This poor breeder will probably lose customers because of this crap she had to deal with. I mean really. Thats just absurd.

  11. The states are now filled with Inactivists, who do nothing about the problem but have plenty of time to shriek and threaten and harass.

  12. We heard that story, too. It's an outrage.

  13. Yikes! That's too bad for everyone involved. I wish everyone who got all blustered could take some of that time and energy and dedicate it to some of the animals out there so desperately in need of help.

  14. Do they want pure bred dogs to disappear? Mutts are fine but they will never have the unique characteristics of breed dogs. I'm hoping that capybaras can eventually differentiate into unique breds and this would never happen without selective breeding.

  15. We're pretty sure that we read in the newspaper, and saw on TV, that some PETA people have been arrested for killing shelter dogs and throwing the bodies into dumpsters. We think that such behavior is way worse than a breeder selling a dog to a good home. So PETA needs to bchange their name to People for the Unethical Treatment of Animals PUTA.
