Killer of Bear Bear Guilty

Federal officer Keith Shepherd has been found guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty and misdemeanor discharging a fire arm in the shooting death of Bear Bear at a dog park in August. This shooting sparked the wrath of animal lovers all over the world. It appears, though, that he received probation instead of jail time. You can read the story here.

Hero's Killer Charged 2nd Degree Murder

Charges against 26 year old Carl Boyer, the man accused of beating Dan Palmer to death after he intervened when Boyer's dogs were being abused, have been upgraded to Second Degree Murder.

Handsome Louis Vuitton

Hi, this is Sam. I asked to write today's post. Any opinions expressed in it are unanimous - we are all in agreement.

But first we need to clear up a misunderstanding from yesterday's post.   This is what we posted, with a photo of Buddy's chest.

"Many of you know we aren't rolling in dough here.  In fact, Jan insists she can't give us an allowance.  If you remember, when our new office chair was turned over to tighten the screws, whatever parts touched the floor were coated in small splinters. Within a few days, Jan had a thick area carpet covering where we like to sprawl out in this heat. If you missed the carpet post, click here.

"Several weeks ago Buddy took to crawling under the couch to sleep. And this is what Buddy's chest looked like when he rolled onto his back on the new carpet."   (You can see Buddy's photo here.)

We highlighted some of it because we evidently didn't explain it too well.  Some readers thought the carpet responsible for Buddy's injuries.  The splinters from the unsealed wood floor were. If Jan had not seen the splinters on the chair, she would not have run out to buy a thick carpet, and if she had not bought the carpet, the dogs would not have been rolling and having fun (splinters in the floor, remember) and she would not have known Buddy was injured until infection set in.  But she caught it and Buddy is healing fine. 



Now we want to give you the good news that the handsome pit bull we are writing about today is now a happy, healthy and loved pet.

But some of you might remember Louis Vuitton, a chained dog that was savagely beaten with a shovel, doused with lighter fluid and set on fire in September 2007. Why? Because Juan Daniels of Montgomery, Alabama, then age 20, was denied the use of his mother's car. So he took out his rage on her dog. His guilt is not speculation. He confessed and was sentenced to 9 years in prison. However, he is now up for parole.

What this man did to his mother's dog is absolutely terrifying. What would he have done to his mother had the dog not been handy? What would he do today to a girlfriend or stranger in another rage?  We believe he should be denied parole and serve his sentence.  Such anger does not just go away because he has been incarcerated. In fact, we wonder would being locked up fuel that rage. 


We ask if you would take a minute to go sign a petition to help keep the perpetrator off the streets to repeat such an offense. Care 2 Petition

This is the type of story we hate to post.  Although it has a happy ending for Louis, he - or any other animal - should never have to suffer at the hands of an abuser.

Happy Murphy and Vote Sugar

We have some good news. Remember Murphy the dog? We have written about him before -- "Murphy" and "Murphy, Mercy and Merci."  Murphy was beaten over the head with a sledgehammer and left for dead by his owner in December 2008. He was saved when a man named Robert Kennedy found him, rushed him to a vet and assumed personal responsibility for the dog and his huge vet bill. However, donations poured in to cover his expenses.

Well, the trial is over and Murphy, who was evidence against the man who tried to kill him, now legally belongs to Kennedy.  These two belong together.  We hope they have many happy and healthy years together. Wet Noodles

We found an interesting post on The Poodle and Dog Blog yesterday, so today we'd like to send you over there to read their solution to how to fund a registry of animal abuse offenders.

It's not that we don't like you, we do. And we hope you will be back to visit us tomorrow.

Nora, Tags & Kittens

When we posted the video of Nora the Piano Cat playing with the full orchestra, Cats in Trees left a link to an interview Milo & Alfie did a while back with Nora. You can read it here. We think you will enjoy it.

And our post on the broken rabies tags of us woofies brought some surprising comments. We were not aware the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand do not have rabies and the pets do not have to have a rabies vaccination. Anyone know why?

The woman who pierced the ears and neck of kittens and calling them "Gothic" was found guilty of animal cruelty. We have trouble understanding why she is so confused as to why this has happened. Just because there is no specific law stating she can't doesn't mean she should. There are laws against cruelty and in some instances it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what constitutes cruelty. You can read about the verdict here.

Stupid Human Laws

We can't help but wonder why humans pass animal protection laws they have no intention of enforcing, yet they will do whatever it takes to stop caring humans from helping the animals the "lawkeepers" refuse to aid. If you're not familiar with Dogs Deserve Better and their campaign to unchain dogs, you're about to meet them. We are shocked and abhor the way some humans keep their animals in deplorable conditions -- intentionally! They refuse to allow anyone with a heart to help the animals. And they pervert the law to prosecute those who do.

Dog advocate charged with trespassing after providing straw to underweight dogs chained in freezing temps: Charges point to immediate need for stronger dog protection laws nationwide



February 6, 2010, Altoona, PA — Dog advocate Tamira Ci Thayne, founder and CEO of Dogs Deserve Better, a non-profit working solely on behalf of chained and penned dogs, spent the coldest night of the year sleepless despite being snug and warm in her bed.

The faces of dogs chained out in single-digit temperatures and sub-zero windchills haunted her, and she worried if these dogs would survive the night in their inadequate houses, many of which contained not even the single insulating element that could well save their lives: straw.

Determined to help local dogs, she rose early and, with another DDB volunteer, took straw, food, and water to some of the worse cases.

At 1492 Dulancey Drive in Lilly, Pennsylvania, Thayne spotted two skinny dogs with inadequate shelter, minimal straw, no food, and no water. She knocked on the door, and when no one answered she left a Dogs Deserve Better calendar and stuffed the doghouses with straw to save the dogs from immediate danger of death by freezing. She gave the dogs each a bone, food, and water. They shivered nonstop while they ate in the -11 degree wind chill.

The boxer mix had very short fur, a too-large doghouse with an opening as large as the dog, and every rib and bone in her back stood out starkly as she tried to decide whether to eat or run into her house for what little warmth it offered.

Current Pennsylvania law dictates that dogs must have access to"sustenance, drink, and sanitary shelter which will protect the animal against inclement weather and preserve the animal's body heat and keep it dry." Thayne knew the law was being broken, so she returned three days later to speak to the caretaker on behalf of the dogs.

Thayne will be in district court on Main Street in Portage, Pennsylvania, at 9:30 a.m. on February 16, 2010 to defend against the bogus charges. She will be bringing photo and video evidence, and well as eye-witness testimony.

Thayne is asking all Pennsylvania residents to stand against this form of abuse by joining the coalition to Unchain Pennsylvania Dogs. The coalition seeks to pass HB1254, a bill setting time limits on chaining, and creating better conditions for Pennsylvania's dogs. Sign up today at Unchainpadogs.com.

The Blainville Wires

Puppy mills are criminal, no matter where they are based. We followed links to a story on one in Blainville, which is near Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 97 wire haired terriers were removed from deplorable conditions. Almost 40 dogs had to be euthanized. The remainder of the dogs have been fostered or adopted for the past two years.

The man responsible, Marc-Andre Laporte, has been convicted and will be sentenced in late February 2008. But he is facing a mere six months of jail time and up to $4,000 in fines. And he wants 18 of his best producers returned.

Those who have been fostering his "favorites" - favorite breeders - can not adopt them until and unless the court makes a decision on whether Mr. Laporte will be able to reclaim them. There is an online petition underway to prevent the return of these dogs to a convicted animal abuser.

Once all the signatures are collected, a printout will be given to Elizabeth Pierce for distribution to the media because it is illegal in Canada to hand petitions to the court.
