Dogs Deserve Better

We're discouraged today because Jan is. It's hard to be upbeat when you're watching someone try not to cry over 3 dogs she agreed to try to help find homes by posting them on the Humane Society/shelter blog. She's not tech savvy so it took her several hours of stress last week to get necessary information and retrieve photos from the submitted word document flyer and get them posted.

Yesterday she walked into the shelter to take a photo and the first dog she saw was one of the dogs she thought was safe in someone's barn awaiting adoption.

Instead, two of the dogs were already at the shelter while she agonized over how to post those pictures so the animals might have a chance. They were both euthanized sometime before the weekend. There are just too many animals being turned in or picked up. Room has to be made for incoming.

The Sheltie was turned in the next day. She has a better chance of being adopted, but there is no guarantee.

Initially, the dogs were dumped (you know how that goes - dump the dogs and drive rapidly away so no one can read your license plate number) and someone who already has several dogs was supposedly taking care of them while others looked for homes. How did they end up at the shelter? That's a confusing story and somehow the woman's neighbor ended up turning in the dogs at the shelter.

So how did the neighbors get the dogs? We'll probably never know the whole truth. What matters now are the facts. Two of the dogs are dead. And it rattled Jan until she kept losing photos in Blogger and making dumb mistakes and having to start from scratch. She gave up at 2 this morning and didn't get back to it till this afternoon. She finally finished about 6 tonight. The animals whose photos she's been trying to post don't have much time. Their last day is Thursday.

On top of that, we learned today that Tammy Grimes, the founder of Dogs Deserve Better, who rescued the dying chained dog in Pennsylvania and was arrested, tried and convicted for it - - Never mind, we'll let Tammy tell you the news herself.

We hope tomorrow will be a good news day.

  1. How very very sad. Please give Jan a big lick from me, and tell her that, whilst on Earth, animals are dear to humans and it hurts the best of humans to say goodbye to them, but when they are gone they are in a happier place where they will not hurt anymore. My humans hold very small hope for the worst of her own kind, but she is a cynical type. As a dog, all I can offer are licks. It's a hard life for us all, but licks make it worth it (and lamb, turkey and ham, too, but let's not get too far off-topic.)

Dogs deserve a lot better, and Jan deserves a big hug!

  2. Jan, honestly we are speechless after hearing this. Where is the fairness? How do people stand by and let this type of stuff happen?

  4. This is so sad. Our Mom volunteers at an open door shelter like this and has to watch when dogs are euthanized for "space"...Mom has cried & cried trying to save or help dogs that are adoptable but put down because there is no room for them. It's a cruel world.

As for the Tammy Grimes conviction...what a bunch of crap!!! That all we can say about that.

  5. We are sorry that your mom is sad. Sometimes it hurts us that humans can be so bad.

  6. I am truly sorry that two of the dogs were euthanized before Jan could help them. This is awful. As for the woman who was convicted of the "crime" of saving a dog's life -- just how unfair can our courts get?

  7. I am so sorry to hear this about the woofies. We are lucky in living in a smaller area, our pet services department is so much better funded and accommodating to pets and finding them new homes.

  8. We are so sorry about the woofies. We hope the remaining ones find homes soon.

  9. This is too sad of a post, though I know we all need to know about these things. Why does bad stuff have to happen? I don't get it.
I almost don't want to leave the rest of my comment but did want your gang to know that Momo kitty is hosting a Valentine's Love Cruise on V day and all are invited. Maybe they need to get away and see some of their friends. Hope they can make it.

  11. Oh Mommy's eyes are leaking - she can't stand to hear of any homeless animal dying because of the shelter system. We can only hope that Jan's work (and all the other beans out there that volunteer) will one day lead to a better world for all dogs and cats!

  12. My Mommy says to tell Jan that she really, really knows about how she feels and if she could, she'd give Jan a HUGE hug.
You never stop feeling, no matter how many times you experience it.
But you have to keep helping.
    You have to...

  17. This makes me very sad. Even woofies deserve loving homes and happy lives. Purrs to all the humans who try to help all critters.

  18. First we want to say that we are sorry for your bad day and sorry for the animals who were put to sleep. We think life in Italy is better because in Italy there is a no kill law, which means that the animals are never put down. You would think that would mean a lot of wild animals wandering the streets because the shelters would be full, but that isn't the case...

We also want to wish each and every one of you a wonderful, happy Valentine's day!

    Buon san valentino!
    Love,
    Opus and Roscoe

  19. Oh Jan, we're so sorry all your efforts were for nothing. The problem is just so enormous and animals fall through the cracks - so disheartening.
On a lighter note, Happy Valentines Day to all of you at the Funny Farm. And we have the "You're Toadally Awesome" award waiting for you at http://blog.ourdoglog.com

  21. Mans inhumanity to man can only be topped by his inhumanity to animals! Political stupidity is a cancer we need to rub out at all cost!
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY to you dear jan and thank you for being their voice for all of us!

  22. Tammy Grimes is awesome. She has earned her halo over and over again. God is watching. Being in rescue has been an eye opening experience and one we will not regret. However it is never easy and we never understand the way some people can justify their actions.
